Surgery: A High Stress Job
• As surgeons, we are:
• Exposed to high levels of stress in our day-to-day work and often face
uncertainties in our practice.
• Exposed to a range of emotions, including a need to rescue the patient, a
sense of failure and frustration when the patient's illness progresses, feelings
of powerlessness against illness and associated losses.
• At greater risk of experiencing mental disorders, substance abuse, suicide,
and impairment in functioning.
• Less likely to talk about the above…because we are SURGEONS.
